Margaret Nanyombi, from Uganda, has developed an application, coupled with a pH sensor, that detects Vaginal Bacteria (Bacterial Vaginosis), an innovation dubbed HerHealth. The venture started in 2015, while still a student at the famous Makerere University in Uganda where, with Esther Ndagire, Jackline Kaweesi Namanda and Pauline Nairuba, they came together to develop the application. Their nickname was: The Team Code Gurus.

The innovation is simple and friendly to use. Indeed, the first thing to do is to collect a urine sample or vaginal fluid in a clean and dry cup. Then, the adrenal stick (the pH sensor) is placed in the urine sample. The pH sensor is then connected to the application that will give the test results within a few seconds.
Based on the results, the application will show you how to remain healthy if your pH value is normal or show you the possible signs or symptoms of an infection if your pH value shows that you have contracted BV (bacterial Vaginosis). The application will then prompt you to see a doctor to monitor your condition. If BV is not treated, it can result in pelvic inflammatory diseases and endanger pregnancies or even cause cervical cancers.
Margaret Nanyombi graduated in 2017 from Makerere University where she obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology.
