Conrad Tankou, from Cameroon, is a Doctor who has developed a smartphone digital microscopy innovation, coupled with a telemedicine platform, to remotely screen/detect breast and cervical cancers.

The system developed by Dr Conrad Tankou and his team is called GIC MED which is the portable digital microscope that connects to a smartphone to remotely scan for the above mentioned cancers. The two products available so far on their telemedicine platform are B-Scan (for Breast Cancer) and C-Scan (for Cervical Cancer).

Cancer screening techniques such as Mammography are not often available in most rural areas in Africa. They are also very expensive. Thus, introducing the concept of digital microscopy and tele-pathology in rural areas can now save lives thanks to a reliable diagnosis via a smartphone.

With this solution, a person’s location or socioeconomic status is no longer a reason for not being able to access quality healthcare. This proves, once more, that Africans are in a better position to observe and find adequate and affordable solutions to their problems.
