Brian Turyabagye, from Uganda, is the Founder and Managing Director of SkyApps Technologies Limited, a Ugandan IT company. He has developed a mobile application which is connected to a smart jacket that acts like a stethoscope in order to diagnose Pneumonia, a disease which presents similar symptoms with malaria, tuberculosis or asthma. His invention is called MamaOpe, which means Mother’s Hope (Hope for the Mother).
The jacket measures body temperature, heart rate and lung condition. Then technical indicators identify lung inflammation (infection). The jacket is also connected, via Bluetooth, to a mobile application that records and analyzes medical data accurately 3 to 4 times faster than a healthcare professional. This is how lives can be saved in Africa, using a technology developed in Africa.
Brian Turyabagye studied at Makerere University (one of the best Universities in Sub-Saharan Africa) where he graduated (BSc) in Telecommunications Engineering. As a pure product of the Ugandan educational system, he shows that studying in Africa is not a hindrance to innovation and invention.
